Company Description

Sponsor an African Scholar (SAAS) is an Irish charity (Charity No CHY 17318) dedicated to providing sustainable solutions for families living in extreme poverty in Kenya. Founded in early 2006, SAAS works directly in Kongowea, an area of Mombasa, where it supports young people to break the cycle of deprivation through education, health awareness and community‑led projects.

The organisation’s core service is a sponsorship programme that enables donors to fund a scholar’s school fees, uniforms, books and related costs for as little as €35 a month. In addition, SAAS runs commissioned projects that raise HIV and drug‑awareness, and it organises community‑development work to improve local infrastructure and livelihoods. By partnering with firms such as Phoenix Law, Cavan County Council, Avolon and Kilquade Parish, SAAS expands its reach and impact, while also offering opportunities for volunteers to get involved.

Through these initiatives, SAAS has helped dozens of students—like Dickens, Mark and Mariam—gain qualifications and pursue careers ranging from accounting to law, and it continues to celebrate the success stories of former scholars who now contribute as teachers, radio presenters and videographers.
