Company Description
The Cladóir/Claddagh Sheep Breeders Society Company Limited by Guarantee is a dedicated preservation committee focused on safeguarding the rare Cladóir (or Claddagh) sheep – the living remnant of an historic breed from the Connemara Hills. Their core mission is to protect the genetic purity of the flock, assess the quality of its distinctive wool and encourage local craftworkers to incorporate this material into traditional Irish textiles.
Key activities include a structured breeding programme aimed at restoring the breed to its original purity, regular inspections of the National Parks and Wildlife Service‑managed Cladóir flocks, and the promotion of Cladóir wool through workshops and collaborations with artisans. The Society also runs a membership scheme for supporters and registered breeders, and it disseminates updates via a newsletter and a regularly refreshed news feed. Recent achievements include securing a €25,000 Heritage Council grant under the Community Heritage Grant Scheme to further their conservation work.
Based in the South Connemara coastal area of County Galway, the Society serves farmers, breeders, craftworkers and anyone with an interest in Irish agricultural heritage, offering a welcoming community for those who wish to help preserve this unique native breed.
