Hope on Wheels CLG

Hope on Wheels (HOW) is a company limited by guarantee, made up of a group of dedicated Irish volunteers passionate about supporting palliative care for thousands of critically ill patients in need of pain relief and comfort in Uganda and wider Africa. Inspired by the late Dr Anne Merriman, the “mother of palliative care” in Africa and the founder of Hospice Africa Uganda, the company is embarking on a mission to bring 11 ambulances for use as mobile outreach palliative care clinics in Uganda. It is partnering with the Palliative Care Association of Uganda in this humanitarian project.

The company’s vision is an Africa where anyone facing a life-limiting illness receives compassionate palliative care including pain relief, dignity, comfort and hope. Its mission is to strengthen palliative care in Uganda and Africa, and to reduce preventable suffering by fundraising to support services that will ensure critically ill people get the care they need. Its goal is to raise a minimum of €500,000 to support palliative care programmes all over Uganda and to deliver 10 fully equipped ambulances for use as mobile outreach clinics in rural and underserved communities. The company is inspired by Dr Anne Merriman’s legacy of compassion.
