Atheist Ireland CLG

Atheist Ireland is a democratic advocacy group for atheism, reason and ethical secularism. Formed in November 2008, the organisation promotes atheism and reason over superstition and supernaturalism, and advocates for an ethical, secular society where the State does not support, finance or give special treatment to any religion. It describes itself as a democratic and successful advocacy group for secularism, rationality, pluralism and human rights, and states that it is the only national-level atheist advocacy group with special consultative status at the United Nations. The group led the successful campaign to repeal the Irish Blasphemy Law. Its activities include advocacy, education and lobbying, conducted through peaceful and legal means such as debates, media, information tables, lunches, education and rational argument. Atheist Ireland lobbies in Ireland and internationally, having addressed Oireachtas Committees, the Constitutional Convention, the Citizens Assembly, United Nations Committees, the OSCE, Council of Europe bodies and the Presidents of the European Union. The organisation also runs campaigns on issues including the Civil Registration Act, schools equality, a secular Irish constitution and defection from the Catholic Church.
